Saratoga Jazz Ensemble

During the 1920’s and 30’s in order to escape the summer temperatures of the city, the wealthy and famous of New York would de-camp to the upstate Spa Town of Saratoga Springs.

The preferred daytime activities of these members of “High Society” would be concentrated around the Race Track and the Thermal Springs from which the Town is named.

In the evenings they would don Tuxedo or Evening Gown to be entertained by the Jazz Greats and Show Biz legends of the Twenties and Thirties who performed nightly in the restaurants, clubs and ballrooms of the Grand Hotels.

The Saratoga Jazz Ensemble was formed during 1966 to replicate the sounds and flavours experienced by the audiences at these venues.
It is the music of New Orleans and Memphis, the jazz and blues of Chicago and New York which form the major part of the group’s repertoire.

The members of the band are drawn from a nucleus of fine musicians who enjoy playing Jazz in each other’s company. Each band member has a number of musical affiliations and engages in diverse musical activities over and above their undertakings with the Saratoga Jazz Ensemble.

Whether the requirement is for a quartet, quintet, sextet or septet, the members of the ensemble, suitably attired, are selected for their ability to play the type of music that best suits the audience, the venue and the occasion.
